Oh man Im glad you asked. You should look into Takashi Miike movies. Hope you like blood and gore. I recommend (as stereotypes) Ichi the Killer, Flowers of Flesh and Blood. But if you want mainstream horror, check out The Host from Korea, Ringu (the original Ring) or Ju-on (the original Grudge)
References :
There's really no such thing as a scary movie anymore. We've all become so desensitized, everything is pretty lacking in the scare department.

Hostel was pretty gruesome

as for oldies, if you can find it, there's a movie called "Don't Go in the Woods... Alone!," (1981) that scared the crap out of me when I was a kid in the mid 80's, but everything seemed scarier in the 80's like the early Friday the 13ths, but they might seem campy now. They were senseless slasher films - nowadays you have to have an actual reason behind killing the dumb slutty teenagers.

Some other good ones are:
April Fools Day
Sleepaway Camp (1 &2-the original 80's versions only)
Witchboard
Slumber Party Massacre
My Bloody Valentine (the original - not that new p.o.s.)

Hell yeah...Knocked up should scare any guy. :)
