How come some people refuse to watch old movies?

Some people just feel like the movies are too poor quality to watch since the technology has taken awhile to get to where it is now i think!

Why do many Americans like to watch very old movies?

January 152010

i just notice that americans are really into old movies, like those way back in the 50s.. girls still cry rewatching them. i, a non-american, find that pretty weird.

so isn’t watching old classic movies considered old fashioned? i mean the way i see it, the US is filled with pop culture trends – its so strange many people still watch very old, romantic movies.

Because many of those movies are iconic. A lot of them were better written, directed and produced than many films made in the present day. They were innovative and in many ways, they defined what good a movie is supposed to be.

Some of my favorite science fiction and horror films came out of the 1940s & 1950s.

Not to mention all of the legendary actors and actresses who populated them. These were men and women who had real talent and a lot of training – not just a bunch of pretty kids like in many of the films produced now a days.

Anyway, if something is good you don’t through it away just because it’s "old".

How do they produce high-definition prints of old movies?

January 22010

So what *is* the "best" manner in which videos are stored? And is this something so good that even the old (’80s) movies were stored in that format?

They go back to the original film and convert it to digtal DVD’s with a high resolution. There is no way you can take a picture scanned at a low resolution and convert it to a higher resolution, because there is no smaller detail to enhance inside an individual pixel. I mean, you can copy an old DVD to a Blu-Ray, but you won’t get Blu-Ray resolution.
.

Why don’t they go back and put CGI effects into old movies to make them better?

December 72009

Old movies could actually be somewhat good if you cut out all of the cheesy effects and stunts and digitally redo them.

Because better effects don’t necessarily make for a better movie. Films are a record of their time, as well as the state of filmmaking in that time. To replace old effects with new ones would rob future generations of the ability to see how movies have progressed and transformed over the years.

And by the way, many old movies are GREAT even without modern special effects.

Why do old movies have that look to them?

December 42009

You know the old movies has that old movie look to it but the new movies look clear and the colors are better. If they made a new movie with a camera that was made in the 70’s would it make you think that movie was made in the 70’s even though it was made in 2009?

It’s not so much the camera as the film stock and processing. Modern films are a bit sharper and finer-grained than those of 30 or 40 years ago. And old film fades a little over time. Also, modern movies use digital color timing to correct and punch up the colors. This is a technology that wasn’t available in the 70s, though it’s sometimes used to restore old movies for theatrical re-release or DVD mastering.
