What are some classic movies I should rent?

November 142009

I love old movies I’m a big fan of Paul Newman, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn etc. etc. I’m going to the rental store today and was wondering what I should pick up! I’m thinking about Cool Hand Luke but I want a few others. Thanks!

I like Cool Hand Luke. Nice choice.
Some others off the top of my head:
Sunset Blvd.
North by Northwest
Harvey
Vertigo
…man, I’m drawing a blank right now. Actually, my wife and I found a lot of great classics by just going through AFI’s (American Film Institute) top 100 movies of all time list. We’ve probably knocked out about 40-50% of it and it’s sure lead us to some great movies.

What are some classic Christmas movies?

November 112009

I’m trying to find some classic Christmas movies, so I can get them together for the Christmastime to watch them. But I am looking for movies that are classic like, A Christmas Story, not movies that have recently come out like Elf and The Polar Express. It’s not that they aren’t good movies, I just want to stick with the classics.

Frosty The Snowman
Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
Jack Frost
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon)
The Life and Adventures of Santa Clause
Miracle on 34th Street
It’s A Wonderful Life
Love Actually
Santa Clause Is Coming To Town
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Home Alone Movies
The Little Drummer Boy
The Santa Clause Movies
The Year Without A Santa Clause
Jingle All The Way
Charlie Brown Christmas
Trapped In Paradise
I know most of them are cartoons but that’s why I love them so much.

I am thinking of opening a theater that screens cult and classic movies, how do I get film reels?

November 82009

I am in the planning stages of starting this theater up and the only problem I’m having is how I get movie reels to play in the screening rooms without violating copyright laws. I would much rather own a few films that I could rotate rather than rent from the distributor. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, that might be slightly difficult. You would have to contact the studio that owns the film to see what their policy is. Theaters nowadays pay studios a percentage of what they earn. They also return the film for recycling so there isnt a huge cost. The difficult part is that you want to OWN the film so that means the studio won’t be getting anything back in return after you pay the initial fee. I assume you would be charging people to watch so you would start making money off the studios property. I’m pretty sure the studio won’t let you do that.
Another thing to think about is do you have a good projector. If you are talking about film that means you would have to get a 35mm film projecter. They arnt exactly cheap and they take some training. If you were to go digital it would depend on what you are doing. You cant use a DVD player and just play discs becuase if you did charge people, that would be illegal. Theater quality movie projecters are still very expensive, running about 70-80 grand.

Sorry to be so negative but these are the problems I see popping up. The only theaters that ive seen play old classics just have them for a few week before returning them. It can be expensive to print up new film for old movies so distributers just send the same print around the country for theaters to rent.

Back in the day, classic movies focused on happy tones. Approximately when did movies become darker in tone?

October 312009

I’m interested to know when they shifted towards its gothic period so to speak where movies became more pessimistic.

All movies of the early times weren’t necessarily "light" or "happy". Although, they were more common. For example, the original "Phantom of the Opera" in 1925 had quite a dark plot to it, and was seen as "dark" back in its time. In today’s world, in comparison, it’s not dark at all. The general film started to evolve into darker plots in the dawn of the "Film Noir" age, usually considered 1943 – 1958, sometimes later. Film noir, was the term used to describe a film that had a very dark dramatic plot, emotional acting, and very dark style of filming, including darker exposure of the physical film. Films with depressing, mysterious, or "dark" plots were no longer considered taboo after film noir, and thus came films like "The Godfather" later on. In movie history, the darkest films were mostly made in the timeframe of film noir, but is starting to rise again in modern films, usually by imitating film noir films in un-original fashion, such as post-punk noir.

How do you feel about modern remakes of classic movies?

October 292009

I personally wish to heck they wouldn’t make them. Why tamper with the classics?

They destroyed The Transformers with that horrible second movie.

They’re going to destroy He-Man soon, and The Smurfs. They’ve already destroyed Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks. I’m sure GI Joe will suck too.

They’re remaking The Karate Kid soon.

Thanks for ruining my childhood stupid Hollywood.

The movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, used to air on Turner Classic Movies commercial-free. How did NBC manage get?

October 272009

How did NBC manage to get exclusive showings. And will Turner Movie Classics ever be able to air it again?

each year tv stations bid on exclusive rights for movies…. sometimes they win….. sometimes they lose….. sometimes…. no one gets exclusive rights.

Classic Movies Genres. What is your favorite?

October 222009

I would like to know what the different genres of classic movies are and which one is your favorite and why. I want to get into classic movies and am curious about your favorites.

I like film noir classic movies like Phillip Marlowe played by Robert Mitchum. I like the camera technique and the way the actors are directed to act. Rebecca and Maltese Falcon are my favorites.
